Frequently Asked Questions
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ACADEMIC LANGUAGE THERAPY AND ACADEMIC LANGUAGE TUTORING?
Academic Language Therapy (ALT) is an intensive, multisensory structured language intervention. In other words, ALT directly teaches every element of written English in a way that supports the learning differences of students with dyslexia.
Academic Language Therapists have completed 200+ hours of coursework along with 700 hours of practicum working with students under the direction of qualified instructors.
ALT is prescriptive and targets student need in the five essential elements of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and reading fluency. Therapists also work with students on oral expression, handwriting, and written expression.
Academic Language Tutoring is goal-oriented support for students who are already participating in an ALT program at their school. These students may just need a few sessions a week of structured support to apply the skills they are learning in their structured language program.
Academic Language Tutoring is also an excellent support for students who have finished or graduated from a structured language program. These students may also need support to generalize their new skills or strengthen automaticity.
In tutoring, students are using structured language programs and individualized learning plans to meet the goals set by parents, therapists, and the student.
IS A FORMAL DIAGNOSIS OF DYSLEXIA REQUIRED?
No, definitely not.
Academic Language Therapy benefits ALL students with learning differences in reading and writing.
Students do not need a formal diagnosis of dyslexia to grow their literacy skills with these highly-structured interventions.
WILL VIRTUAL ALT WORK FOR MY STUDENT WITH ADHD?
Many students with ADHD thrive in the virtual model of ALT.
Lessons are fast-paced and are designed to maximize student engagement.
We also use physical materials, in addition to virtual materials, so that lessons are multisensory. There are plenty of opportunities for kinesthetic/tactile learning and movement.
WHAT MATERIALS WILL MY CHILD NEED?
Your child needs a reliable device and a good internet connection.
A headset with a microphone and a hard-wired internet connection are very beneficial, but not required.
Program materials are provided by the academic language therapist for a one-time materials fee in the initial billing cycle.
